Akumal is a well kept secret among American and Canadian vacationers. This small resort community is a welcome break from the all inclusive hotels packed into nearby Cancun and Playa del Carmen.
Akumal is about an hour and 35 minutes south of Cancun and around 40 minutes from Playa del Carmen. The highway between Cancun and Akumal is new and in good repair. If you want to rent a car and drive to Akumal from Cancun, you can see more during your vacation in Mexico. Akumal is central to the Mayan Riviera and all the sights and activities the Mexican Caribbean has to offer.
Hop on of one of Villa Kokobeach's bikes and visit Yalku Lagoon for snorkeling in the calm, sheltered waters there. Or participate in activities with the Centro Ecologico Akumal. Visit Aktun Chen, a large dry cave nearby Akumal which offers underground tours. Akumal divemasters take snorkeling and diving trips every day to Akumal's reefs and nearby cenote water filled caverns.
Akumal has a small town feel, but all the services and shops you need are right here. Two mini supermarkets, a money exchange, an Internet and telephone office, and a small car rental operation make up Akumal's "downtown". English is widely spoken and all business will accept US dollars.
There are just a few restaurants in Akumal, but they are all very good. Turtle Bay Cafe serves the Mayan Riviera's best breakfast and tasty light lunches. Another favorite, La Buena Vida, 2 for 1 price drinks on ocean view bar swings from 5-7pm. You can dine on beach front tables, or upstairs in the main restaurant.
